Dashiell Hammett is one of the most famous writers, who lived and worked in San Francisco. He wrote detective stories in the noir style. The building where he worked as a Pinkerton Detective before turning writer, his former residences in San Francisco and many places mentioned in his most famous work, “The Maltese Falcon” are all located in downtown. The most famous, John’s Historic Grill, is a beloved local steak house, with delicious food and walls filled with historic photos and paraphernalia from the Dashiell Hammett novels. To this day “Sam Spade’s Lamb Chops” are on the menu, an item inspired by a character in the Maltese Falcon. The secret entrance to Hammett’s Pinkerton Office, in the Flood Building, is located next to John’s Grill and the friendly manager is more than willing to point it out, if you ask.

Visit Historic Lotta’s Fountain:
Lotta’s Fountain is a famous San Francisco Landmark. It was commissioned by Lotta Crabtree, a famous Vaudeville performer and dancer, turned actress, who lived in San Francisco in the late 19th Century. The Fountain hold historical significance, as it was a meet up spot for survivors of the 1906 earthquake, on the date of the quake, April 18, 1906 and has continued to be a spot San Franciscans gather to remember the quake annually. Every year on April 18th, at 5:12 am, it is tradition to gather at Lotta’s Fountain. Many survivors continued to show up annually until that last passed away several years ago. To this day, the memory of the survivors is kept alive through speeches, costumes and tributes paid at the historic fountain each year. It is a fun and educational experience for San Francisco history buffs.

The giant gingerbread sugar castle is a San Francisco tradition that brings a smile to the faces of the young and the young at heart each December. The tradition was started by Pastry Chef Jean Francois Houdre in 2005. After an epic family European Vacation, where they toured many Castles, his children urged him to build a giant gingerbread and sugar castle for the holidays. The original was made with 70 pounds of gingerbread,130 pounds of pastillage (Powdered sugar, egg whites and gelatin dough) 40 pounds of pulled and bubble sugar, Royal icing made of 300 pounds of sugar and egg whites, 40 pounds of molasses, 60 pounds of flour and 100 pounds of assorted Christmas Candy. It took 360 hours to create. The castle has gotten larger and more elaborate annually. This is a sweet holiday tradition not to be missed.

Sometimes you will find hidden gems on dusty old shelves at some of downtowns liquor stores and convenience stores. For a while Chartreuse was hard to find in the city but some forgotten old bottles were found on dusty top shelves that nobody had paid much attention to in years. If you venture over into the less desirable parts of downtown, you can sometimes find some incredible bargains.
Enjoy the Quirky Array of Small Free Museums Scattered Throughout Downtown:
The Palace Hotel has a mini museum at the end of the front hall that is filled with artifacts. The cocktail enthusiast will enjoy some of the items from the days of Cocktail Bill Boothby, one of San Francisco’s most famous barkeeps at the end of the 19th Century. The St. Francis has a little museum in the lobby, displaying artifacts from the 1906 earthquake and a mini-museum off the lobby about the hotels history and their hotels coin washing service over the years. Wells Fargo has a mini free Museum as well. These fun, quirky, free Museums are a great way to learn about San Francisco’s interesting history.

Located in the Palace Hotel, the Pied Piper Bar is known for its Green Goddess Salad and the stunning Pied Piper Painting, dine by artist Maxfield Parrish The painting is absolutely stunning. Several years back, the hotel nearly auctioned off the painting at Christie’s but it caused an uproar in the city and to this day the painting remains in its proper home at its name sake bar, The Pied Piper.
Dine on Delicious Old School San Francisco Seafood Meal at the City’s Oldest Restaurant, Tadich Grill:
Tadich Grill is a true SF dining experience. They serve all the classic seafood dishes of yesteryear, such as Lobster Thermadore and Oysters Rockefeller and classic SF dishes like Hangtown Fry, Crab and Shrimp Louis Salads, Monterey Bay Sand Dabs and, of course, Cioppino. They are one of the last spots in the city with private booth dining. They have been serving fresh seafood and steaks for over 100 years, so they must be doing something right.
Treat Yourself to Delicious Baked Goods at SF’s Quirkiest Downtown Storefront:
Battered Bakery has a cute and quirky Kiosk on the corner of California and Kearny. Jen Musty, a passionate baker, started the local bakery in 2008, with an emphasis on high quality, locally sourced ingredients and seasonal baked goods made in small batches. Their not to be missed item is known as a “Sand Angel”, an original creation of Musty. It is a chewy cinnamony cookie.
Steal a New York Moment at David’s Delicatessen:
Opened by David Apfelbaum in 1952, David’s Diner will give you that New York feeling. This classic Diner/Delicatessen serves all the classics like Pastrami, Latkes, Monza Ball Soup Bagels and more. They even offer Dr. Brownes Sodas to wash it all down with.
Get an Afternoon Pick Me Up of Turkish Coffee and Middle Eastern Pastry at Delah Coffee on Clay Street:
Delah Coffee is a relative newcomer to the city. The coffee shop is run by a local family by way of Yemen. They make the perfect Turkish Coffee and serve it in the traditional copper pots, with small Turkish coffee cups to enjoy it in. There is a wide array of various renditions of baklava and other classic Middle Eastern Pastries. This is not a spot to grab a Joe on the go. It is a place to relax and enjoy a coffee over conversation with friends or while reading a good book.
Take Some Photos at the Fountain that Irish Band U2 Member Bono Once Infamously Covered in Graffiti at a Free Concert:
The Vaillancourt Fountain is not the most attractive art work in the city. Currently the city is considering tearing it down. The fountain does have an interesting history. When Bono of U2 mistakenly read a fans sign and mistook it for a political message to do with something happening in Ireland at the time, he broke out in a fit of rage and put graffiti all over the Vaillancourt Fountain. He ended up in hot water with Diane Feinstein. Unfortunately the graffiti was removed but, at least for now, you can return to the scene of the crime for a photo opportunity.
Admire the Views From the Bar at The Marriot Marquee:
Atop the Marriott Marquee is a Bar, appropriately named The View lounge. It is a great spot to sip martinis and marvel at the beauty of the city. It is a perfect destination to view the Blue Angels during Fleet Week, each September.
Head to the Downtown Branch of the Public Library and Visit Little Tidbits of SF History in Person:
Herb Caen’s Loyal Royal Type Writer is on Display at the down town branch of the public library. Lily Coit’s original, hand written diary can be seen there as well. A copy of the diary typed in the 1950’s can be read on library grounds.

Located on Yerba Buena Lane, Tropisueno offers delicious, fast casual Mexican Cuisine that won’t. Break the bank. The Grove offers some of the best counter service food in the city. Ride a Cable Car:
Today the Cable Cars are only found in areas with heavy tourist traffic. Not that long ago, more cable cars covered the city and were used as a form of public transportation. In the mid-twentieth century people used to dress to the nines and take the cable cars to Union Square for a day of shopping and lunch. Pick up the Cable Car at the turnaround on Powell and take it up to Nob Hill for some killer views.

Inside the Macy’s on Union Square is San Francisco’s Cheesecake Factory. Although most city dwellers prefer patronizing local eateries, this guilty pleasure is worth all the calories. The giant menu of savory food and wide array of cheesecake flavors offers something for everyone.
Head to Union Square in March For Free Tulip Day:
San Francisco is truly an international city. We even celebrate the Dutch Tradition of Free Tulip Day annually. If you plan to attend and to get killer photos, I would recommend getting up super early and heading to Union Square. The lines get long. If you arrive late and do not feel like standing in line, you can enjoy another delicious Dutch tradition, Stroopwafels. A local Stroopwafel Vendor sets up a stand at the end of Maiden Lane each year. The Stroopwafel is a delightful Dutch cookie with two delicately sweet, waffled cookies on the outside and a maple filling on the inside. The treat was created in the city of Gouda.
