San Francisco Giants: Matt Cain Pitches Perfect Game

Matt Cain just pitched the first perfect game in franchise history!

The perfect game is surely a dream for any pitcher and for Matt Cain, it is now a reality. In a 10-0 victory against the Astros, Cain also achieved a career high with 14 strikeouts. Each one of his 125 pitches got the crowd exponentially more excited and the final inning couldn’t be any smoother with some brilliant plays on the field as well.

For the 2nd time in 3 years, there have been 2 perfect games in one season (the last on by Phil Humber of the Chicago White Sox back on April 21). This is also the fifth no-hitter of the season and the third in June.

Cain: “this is awesome. It definitely was not just me. Everyone did a lot of work. It turned out perfect.”

Posey: “I was as nervous as I’ve ever been on the baseball diamond. I’m not going to lie”

Cain: “it felt like the World Series bit it was louder. I’ve never felt it like that after every pitch”

From Wikipedia (already updated): A perfect game is defined by Major League Baseball as a game in which a pitcher (or combination of pitchers) pitches a victory that lasts a minimum of nine innings and in which no opposing player reaches base.^[2] Thus, the pitcher (or pitchers) cannot allow any hits, walks, hit batsmen, or any opposing player to reach base safely for any other reason: in short, “27 up, 27 down”. The feat has been achieved 22 times in the history of major league baseball—20 times since the modern era began in 1900, most recently by Matt Cain of the San Francisco Giants on June 13, 2012.^[3]
