Valentine's Day Box of Chocolates
Valentine’s Day Box of Chocolates

Throughout history, many foods have been thought to have aphrodisiac properties. The edible aphrodisiac, most associated with Valentine’s Day, is chocolate. Pastry chef’s feature a myriad of chocolate desserts on restaurant Valentine’s Day menu offerings. Chocolates, are one of the most common gifts given to romantic partners as a Valentine’s Day gift.

San Francisco has no shortage of amazing, local chocolates to choose from. Chocolate has been a part of the culture here from the days of the Gold Rush, when Italian Immigrant and chocolatier, Domenico Ghirardelli, moved to San Francisco and founded the, now world famous, Ghirardelli Chocolate Company. Over the years many high quality chocolate makers and confectioner’s have set up shop in the Bay Area, bringing us a wide array of delicious artisan chocolates and confections to choose from. More and more entrepreneurs are getting in the chocolate game, including relative new comer, Kokak , a Castro based confectioner that was founded during covid and is going strong with a gig local following today. One thing is for sure, there are plenty of beautifully packaged and delicious chocolates to choose from, when shopping for a gift for your sweet heart this Valentine’s Day. Here are some of our favorites.

Ghirardelli

Ghirardelli Chocolate are very accessible in San Francisco. SF’s oldest chocolate maker and confectioner has many locations throughout the city with ice cream Parlors and retail shops, the most famous at its namesake “Ghirardelli Square”, where there are 4 outlets offering delicious ice cream creations, confections, retail items and a beautiful view of the San Francisco Bay. It is housed where the chocolate factory once stood.

Domenico Ghirardelli, started as a seller of chocolate in Stockton but soon realized that, during the Gold rush Era there was already a high demand for high quality chocolate and confections, among the minors. He soon set up a shop on the corner of Broadway and Battery Streets in San Francisco. In 1852 he became the first manufacturer of high quality chocolate in the United States and he soon earned a reputation for excellence.

Ghirardelli makes special edition Valentine’s Day Collections annually in Valentine’s day themed packaging. The prices are very reasonable, making Ghirardelli a great option for anyone on a budget, who desires something of higher quality than a giant Hershey’s Kiss from the Local Wall-green’s. They offer items like a cute Valentine’s Day Box, filled with their famous, individually wrapped chocolate squares and a heart shaped box of their pralines. Or take your sweetie to the Ghirardelli Soda Fountain to split an ice cream sundae or milk shake or to enjoy their giant, fresh strawberries hand dipped in chocolate.

See’s is an iconic confectioner of old fashioned candies and chocolates. The company started in Las Angeles California in 1921 but soon expanded to San Francisco, in 1936. Their confections are absolutely delicious, dangerously delicious. It is hard to stop at just one piece. Their shops and product bring a sense of nostalgia. See’s is definitely one of San Francisco’s most famous and beloved candy makers.

The company is over a hundred years old and has made it through difficult times in history brilliantly, which says a lot about their product and business sense. The beloved candy maker survived the Great Depression and WWII rationing. They were brilliant marketers. Charles See launched what we currently know, as wholesale pricing during the Great Depression, offering discounted prices for pre-paid orders of over 50 pounds. They showcased the product at the World’s Fair in 1939, along with a mini-kitchen were observers could watch them hand dip chocolates. They were early to get in on the television game, sponsoring a float at the 1949 Rose Bowl Parade of a Giant Easter Bunny. One of the most iconic moments in 20th Century television history took place at a See’s Candy Factory (the one in LA on La Cienega, not in San Francisco however); the I Love Lucy Episode were Lucy and Ethel get a job at a candy factory. See’s has shops all over the city and still makes high quality, delectable, old fashioned chocolates. They make great gifts and Souvenirs. They also offer free samples when you are browsing. See’s is currently owned by Warren Buffet, under the Berkshire Hathaway Umbrella. They still create original recipes created by Mary See herself. They have been rated as America’s #1 retailer by Newsweek and are among the top 25 places to work in the Bay Area. A trip to See’s Chocolates is an absolute must when visiting the Bay Area.

Recchiuti

In 1997, Michael Recchiuti and his wife, Jackie, brought artisan, European and American inspired chocolate confections to San Francisco. They partnered with revered French Chocolate Maker, Valrhona, to create unique artisan chocolate confections made with non-traditional savory ingredients. They also created a selection of all American favorites, inspired by his childhood in Philadelphia, such as do-it-yourself s’mores. The design of the chocolates themselves, as well as the packaging is alluring and inspired by fine art, music and architecture. Jackie works very closely with graphic designers to create product that is not only delicious to the taste but beautiful as well. Michael wrote a James Beard Award winning book in 2005 with Fran Gage entitled, “Chocolate Obsession”. The chocolate factory is located in San Francisco’s Dogpatch Neighborhood but the company’s retail location is inside San Francisco’s Historic Ferry Building. Recchiuti Chocolate, including their popular whiskey, and wine pairing chocolate kits, can be found at some of San Francisco’s local artisan grocers and mom and pop shops. They make beautiful gifts and great souvenirs.

For Valentine’s Day pick up a box of beautiful hand crafted chocolates as a gift for your somebody special. They offer elegant Valentine’s Day chocolate boxes with XOXO in red on the outside. Nothing too cutesy, just classy, elegant packaging that gets the sentiment across. If you are planning on cooking for your sweetheart this year, pick up a box of the whiskey or wine chocolate pairings and some of your favorite whiskeys or wines and do a fun chocolate pairing for dessert. Or, if you are really ambitious in the kitchen, prepare one of the indulgent chocolate desserts, from Michael Recchiuti’s cook book.
