A Toast to the Dead: Jerry Crawl Brings Psychedelic Vibes and Pub Crawl Energy to Haight-Ashbury

Updated: August 21, 2025

San Francisco’s newest tribute to Jerry Garcia celebrates 60 years of the Grateful Dead in The Haight.

The City of San Francisco is an amazing place to live. When I left the East Coast more than 20 years ago for “sunny” California, the amount of cool things to do was almost overwhelming. I did all of the touristy things like Alcatraz, Coit Tower and walking around Pier 39, but being a music lover, the city was filled with interesting things to do. I went to shows at The Warfield, The Fillmore, Great American Music Hall, etc, but probably the coolest thing I did when I was settled in SF, was spend a day in Haight-Ashbury. The location of the Summer of Love, the former homes of Janice Joplin and The Grateful Dead, Amoeba Music and more were now just a short ride away from my house. It’s a neighborhood that is always fun to visit and really feels like a step back in time.

It’s easy to take things for granted when you live in a place for an extended period of time. If you haven’t headed to The Haight in a while, why not enjoy a fun day of drinks at Jerry Crawl on Saturday, August 23?

Sixty years after the Grateful Dead first lit up the Bay Area with swirling guitar solos, barefoot fans & a sound that defined a generation, San Francisco is still finding new ways to celebrate the band’s legacy. Jerry Crawl, a groovy new pub crawl hitting the streets of Haight-Ashbury, blending the soul of the Summer of Love with the simple joy of a Saturday night out.

The concept is as San Francisco as it gets. Take a city that reveres its musical past, add in a few legendary bars, a bunch of party peoplem (and Deadheads, of course) + sprinkle on some glitter, DJs, drink specials, and tie-dye. What you get is Jerry Crawl, a tribute event that channels the freewheeling energy of the ’60s and pours it into pint glasses from 4PM to 10PM across one of the most iconic neighborhoods in rock history. It’s where Jerry Garcia once lived, played, and unknowingly helped birth a counterculture movement that would ripple through decades of music, fashion & politics. Today, it’s still wild, still weird and one of the only places where you might stumble across a drum circle on your way to a dive bar.

Jerry Crawl invites participants to experience this world firsthand. With a drink in hand and Dead tracks spinning in the air, you’ll bounce between neighborhood staples like Kezar Pub, O’Reilly’s, Murio’s Trophy Room, Maria’s on Haight, Mad Dog in the Fog, and more. Each spot will be serving up exclusive drink specials, good vibes and their own flavor of Haight Street charm.

The event isn’t affiliated with the Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia, or Dead & Company, but they serve as inspiration for the celebration.

Jerry Crawl includes:

  • A “Find the Gnome” Contest, because of course it does
  • Party favors to get you in the spirit (think beads, bandanas, and peace signs)
  • Awesome drink specials
  • And other special activities you’ll just have to stumble upon to believe

It’s weird, it’s wonderful and it’s a perfect excuse to trade your jeans for some bell bottoms and relive the free-spirited chaos of the past.

Who’s It For?

Deadheads, obviously. But Jerry Crawl isn’t about gatekeeping the past, it’s about inviting everyone in. Whether you were front row at Winterland in ’74 or you’re just discovering “Bertha” on your streaming playlist, this event is for anyone who wants to celebrate good music, good people, and great drinks. It’s for the old school, the new wave & everyone in between.

Tickets start at just $12, and there’s no cover at any of the bars.
