The San Francisco Bay Area is located just south of one of the best wine regions in the world, so its no surprise that wine is an integral part of the culture of the area. From winery tours in Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley to a huge variety of wine events in the Bay Area, there’s always opportunities to taste some great wines. While there are a huge amount of wineries producing great wines, there are definitely some that stand out from the rest. There are competitions worldwide that allow top sommeliers to rate and award wines in a number of categories based on region, grape, style, vintage and more. Competitions like the London Wine Competition, Sommeliers Choice Awards, The International Wine Challenge and The Decanter World Wine Awards are well know for choosing the best of the best from a huge field of entries.
San Francisco is home to several important wine competitions and one of the best annuals is actually the biggest competition in the world for American Wines. The San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition is an amazing event for wine lovers where top professional wine judges gather together to choose the best wines from over 7,000 entries.
Now it wouldn’t be fair to just watch wine experts do the tastings without getting to try some yourself. Good thing that the competition includes a public tasting where you will get a chance to sniff, taste and swirl some amazing Zinfandels, Cabernets, Chardonnays, Pinots and more. With over 1,500 gold medal winners represented at the tasting, you will get a chance to not only try some award-winning wines, but also to learn more about the art of tasting, food pairings and more.
The San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition Public Tasting is held every February at Fort Mason.
