Prepare to enter a world where ancient mythology, unforgettable music, and contemporary storytelling collide when Hadestown arrives at San Francisco’s Orpheum Theatre from Thursday, January 7 through Sunday, January 10, 2027. Part of a national tour, this acclaimed musical invites audiences on a haunting yet hopeful journey into a world where love is tested, choices carry enormous consequences, and a single song might have the power to change your fate.

Created by celebrated singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and developed with original director Rachel Chavkin, Hadestown brings together two timeless Greek myths. The first follows Orpheus and Eurydice, two young dreamers whose love is challenged by hardship and forces beyond their control. The second centers on King Hades and Persephone, whose complicated relationship mirrors the cycles of separation, renewal, and hope that shape the world around them.

As the stories intertwine, audiences are drawn into the mysterious underworld of Hadestown. Orpheus, a gifted musician who believes in the transformative power of his music, is determined to find a way forward when Eurydice’s fate takes a devastating turn. His journey leads him into Hades’ realm, where love, courage, trust, and determination are put to the ultimate test.

The production’s distinctive musical style is one of its defining features. Mitchell’s score draws on folk, jazz, blues, and other musical influences, creating an atmospheric sound that makes the ancient myths feel immediate and contemporary. The music does more than accompany the story—it becomes part of the world itself, helping to convey the characters’ hopes, fears, dreams, and struggles.

The show’s extraordinary acclaim includes eight 2019 Tony Awards®, including Best Musical, as well as the 2020 Grammy® Award for Best Musical Theater Album. These honors reflect the production’s distinctive combination of music, storytelling, direction, and theatrical design.

San Francisco audiences will have several opportunities to experience the musical during its limited four-day engagement at the Orpheum Theatre, running January 7–10, 2027. The performance lasts approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, including one intermission, giving audiences time to become fully immersed in its mythic world. Access performances are also available, providing additional opportunities for audiences to experience the production.

At its heart, Hadestown is a story about what people are willing to risk for love and what it means to hold onto hope when circumstances seem impossible. It explores devotion, sacrifice, perseverance, and the fragile line between optimism and despair while giving familiar mythology a fresh emotional perspective.

Whether you’re a longtime musical-theater enthusiast, a fan of Greek mythology, or simply looking for an emotionally powerful live performance, Hadestown offers an experience filled with beautiful music, dramatic storytelling, and timeless themes. When the curtain rises at San Francisco’s Orpheum Theatre, audiences are invited to follow the music underground—and discover a story about love and hope that feels remarkably relevant today.
