Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 with Bill Orcutt and Famous Mammals
Talent Moat presents Thinking Fellers Union Local 282, with Bill Orcutt and Famous Mammals, for a distinctive night of experimental, underground, and genre-defying music on Thursday, October 8, 2026. The event takes place at the Great American Music Hall, a particularly fitting setting for the return of Thinking Fellers Union Local 282, who are set to perform at the venue for the first time in more than 20 years.
Thinking Fellers Union Local 282, often known as TFUL 282, occupy a singular place in San Francisco’s underground music history. During the 1990s, the group became closely associated with the Bay Area’s adventurous creative community, developing a sound that drew from noise rock, improvisation, surrealism, unconventional pop, and experimental composition. Their music could move from abrasive dissonance to unexpected sweetness, combining unusual instrumentation and shifting structures into performances that were difficult to predict.
The band’s return features original members Brian Hageman, Mark Davies, Hugh Swarts, and Jay Paget, with assistance from Darrell Bourque and Kate Horn. Their recent reissues have renewed interest in the group’s influential catalog, making this San Francisco performance a rare opportunity to experience the music in the city where much of its history was made.
The evening also features acclaimed experimental guitarist Bill Orcutt, whose highly individual playing incorporates elements of American primitive guitar, blues, avant-garde composition, and free improvisation. His stripped-down approach produces a raw and intensely expressive sound that has made him a significant figure in experimental music.
Opening the night are Famous Mammals, featuring members of Naked Roommate and The World. Their music blends post-punk influences with an eclectic, collage-like approach that feels both familiar and difficult to categorize.
Doors open at 7:00 PM, with the show beginning at 8:00 PM. Advance tickets are $30, with tickets at the door priced at $35. Tickets go on sale Friday, July 24 at 10:00 AM.
For listeners interested in San Francisco’s musical history, experimental rock, improvisation, and unconventional songwriting, this lineup offers an especially rich evening of live music.
