On Wednesday, October 21, 2026, The Chapel in San Francisco will host an unforgettable night of American roots music as The Devil Makes Three takes the stage with special guest Two Runner. Doors open at 7:00 PM, with the show beginning at 8:00 PM. Known for their electrifying performances and distinctive blend of folk, blues, Americana, and punk, The Devil Makes Three have spent more than two decades pushing the boundaries of acoustic music while staying true to its storytelling roots.
Formed in Santa Cruz, California, in 2002 by Pete Bernhard and Cooper McBean, The Devil Makes Three have developed a devoted following through music that is gritty, rhythmic, emotionally direct, and impossible to neatly categorize. Their songs draw from the melancholy of traditional blues, the spirit of folk storytelling, and the raw attitude of punk, creating a sound that can be equally suited to quiet reflection and a packed dance floor.
The band’s latest album, Spirits, continues that evolution while returning to the stripped-down character that has long defined their work. Produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Ted Hutt, the album explores themes of grief, addiction, division, inequality, and resilience. Songs including “Lights on Me” and “Spirits” confront personal loss, while “Half as High” and “Divide and Conquer” examine broader social and political tensions. Recorded at Dreamland, a converted church studio near Woodstock, New York, Spirits carries a haunting atmosphere that complements its deeply personal subject matter.
Longtime collaborator MorganEve Swain joins the band on upright bass and vocals, bringing her own distinctive musical voice to the lineup. Despite the seriousness of the album’s themes, The Devil Makes Three remain a rhythm-driven live act whose concerts transform struggle and emotion into communal celebration.
Opening the evening is Two Runner, led by Paige Anderson. Her latest record, Porchlight, combines intimate storytelling, beautiful string arrangements, and spirited hymns for those navigating uncertainty, loss, and perseverance. Having performed on stages supporting artists such as Sierra Ferrell, Watchhouse, and Molly Tuttle, Anderson brings years of experience and a deeply personal approach to roots music.
Together, The Devil Makes Three and Two Runner offer a compelling night of heartfelt songwriting, acoustic musicianship, infectious rhythms, and emotional storytelling. Fans can expect an evening where melancholy and celebration meet, honoring the traditions of American roots music while giving them a fresh, fearless voice.
