If there is any band that was able to carry on the spirit of The Grateful Dead, Phish is definitely at the top of the list. While their sound definitely comes from the same vein, they added their own unique jazz-driven sound with the same feels as the Dead established starting in the 60s. They came onto the scene in 1988 with a focus that extended more to live shows than studio albums where they could improvise and just take some time to jam out with their free-form musical style. The group formed in 1983 in Burlington, VT with members Trey Anastasio, Mike Gordon, Jon Fishman and Paige McConnell as well as Jeff Holdsworth, who left the band early on. The bands music doesn’t fit into a single genre, but their catalog features a variety of influences including bluegrass, jazz, country, pop, funk, progressive rock and more. The band has released 16 studio albums a ton of live albums and to this date have sold more than 8 million records. However, Phish is a band that you want to see live, the entire experience from meeting new friends in the parking lot to singing, dancing and rocking a mean air guitar in the crowd is something you need to see live and in person to really understand the draw. You will have a chance to check out this iconic band live as they make a stop in the Bay Area for a two-day stint at Chase Center.
