Dinosaur Jr. with Stef Chura — Event Description

Dinosaur Jr. returns to the stage on Sunday, October 18, 2026, with special guest Stef Chura, bringing decades of distinctive guitar-driven rock together with the newest chapter in the band’s celebrated recording career. Doors open at 6:00 pm, with the show beginning at 7:00 pm, making this an early-evening opportunity for local audiences to experience one of alternative rock’s most unmistakable sounds live.

At the heart of the event is Dinosaur Jr.’s core trio: J Mascis on guitar and vocals, Lou Barlow on bass and vocals, and Murph on drums. Together, they have developed a sound that combines loose vocals, sharply defined guitars, and an explosive rhythm section. Their new album, There Near, is the sixth studio album the band has recorded in the two decades since its celebrated rebirth and follows 2021’s Sweep It Into Space.

Recorded in short, intense bursts over the course of a year at Amherst’s Bisquiteen Studio, There Near was made primarily by the trio, with additional piano and organ contributions from musician Ken Mauri. The album is described as roaring from beginning to end, continuing Dinosaur Jr.’s talent for balancing melodic songwriting with immense guitar-driven intensity.

J Mascis’ guitar sound is particularly prominent on the new material. He used a 1970s Mesa Boogie MK 1 amplifier, seeking to recapture a character reminiscent of the sound on the band’s earliest album. That approach contributes to the raw, powerful quality running through There Near, where even songs that begin with a softer or more melodic character can eventually erupt into fiery guitar distortion.

The songwriting also offers contrasting perspectives. Mascis describes his lyrics as intentionally open-ended, while Lou Barlow’s contributions, including “Blowin’ Up” and “No One’s Ready,” bring sharper lyrical edges to more melodic musical settings.

For local rock fans, the October 18 performance offers a chance to hear Dinosaur Jr.’s newest songs alongside the legacy of a band whose sound has remained instantly recognizable. With Stef Chura joining as special guest, the evening pairs Dinosaur Jr.’s expansive guitar attack with another artist on the bill. For anyone drawn to loud guitars, powerful live instrumentation, melodic songwriting, and the unpredictable dynamics of a Dinosaur Jr. performance, this Sunday-night show promises plenty of sonic intensity.
