Blankets, Blockbusters and a Roaring Family Afternoon at Thrive City

Thrive City is turning a fall Sunday into a big-screen family adventure with “Blankets & Blockbusters: The Lion King,” bringing Disney’s beloved animated classic to the plaza for an open-air movie experience on Sunday, September 13, 2026. Families, friends and movie fans are invited to bring their own blankets, settle in under the Bay Area sky and enjoy The Lion King on Thrive City’s giant plaza screen.

The entertainment is less about a traditional live performance and more about creating a lively, movie-themed gathering around one of Disney’s most enduring stories. Guests can snap photos at a dedicated movie-themed photo opportunity and explore additional activities throughout the Entertainment Zone, making the event feel like more than simply watching a film.

The festivities begin at 12:00 p.m., with The Lion King scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. Because an outdoor screening can get chilly, attendees are encouraged to dress warmly and bring a cozy blanket. Lawn chairs and coolers are not permitted, so guests should plan for a comfortable blanket-based setup.

Food is part of the experience, too. Splash will offer a special Movie Day menu featuring the $4 Simba Slider, a $5 Blockbuster Beef Slider, $4 popcorn, a $4 Timone’s Cookie and a $3 Cozy Cinema Hot Chocolate topped with marshmallows and whipped cream. Guests ages 21 and over can also purchase to-go alcoholic beverages from participating Thrive City businesses to enjoy within the designated Entertainment Zone; outside alcohol is prohibited.

Parking is available seven days a week at the Chase Center Garage, 99 Warriors Way, making the event convenient for families arriving by car. With photo opportunities, themed food, an iconic animated adventure and a relaxed outdoor atmosphere, The Lion King screening promises a fun way to spend a September afternoon together.
