Oakland is in for a night of adventurous musicianship and irresistible grooves when five-time GRAMMY-winning collective Snarky Puppy returns to the Paramount Theatre on Friday, October 2, 2026, at 8:00 PM. Calling Snarky Puppy simply a jazz band, fusion group, or jam band misses the point. The collective has developed a sound that moves freely between jazz, funk, soul, R&B, blues, gospel, and rock. Their own description—“music for your brain and booty”—captures the unusual balance at the heart of their performances: complex arrangements and virtuosic playing delivered with an unmistakable sense of groove.

Led by bassist and composer Michael League, Snarky Puppy is a global collective with a rotating cast of up to a dozen musicians. That lineup brings together world-class instrumentalists with credits alongside artists including Erykah Badu, Marcus Miller, Justin Timberlake, Roy Hargrove, Snoop Dogg, and John Mayer. The group’s Grammy-winning Empire Central, released in 2022, drew inspiration from Dallas, where the band developed its musical identity. The album blended jazz-inflected funk with Southern rock, electric blues, classic soul, R&B, and modern gospel, earning Snarky Puppy its fifth GRAMMY Award for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album.

Their latest project, Somni, released in 2025 with the acclaimed Metropole Orkest, pushes that creative approach even further. Rich orchestral textures meet the band’s signature grooves, creating a sweeping, cinematic sound that expands their musical palette without sacrificing its rhythmic core.
